En af Sri Lankas regeringspartier har forlangt, retsforfølgning af en ledende tamilsk biskop, efter at han har fordømt regeringens menneskerettighedsovertrædelser.

Den romersk-katolske biskop af Mannar og 30 tamilske katolske præster, skrev til FN`s menneskerettighedsråd og krævede en uafhængig undersøgelse af menneskerettighedsbeskyldningerne.
Sri Lankas buddhistiske nationalistiske parti JHU har beskyldt biskoppen for at sympatisere med De Tamilske Tigre og har forlangt biskoppen retsforfulgt.
Den tamilske biskop af Mannar Stift, Rayappu Joseph, støttet af 30 tamilske katolske præster, underskrev et brev med skarp kritik af Sri Lankas regering. Udover at opfordre til en uafhængig international undersøgelse af krigen og behovet for sandhed og ansvarlighed, fordømte brevet, hvad der beskrives som fortsatte krænkelser af menneskerettighederne. Underskriverne beskyldte også Sri Lankas regeringen for de seneste bortførelser af menneskerettigheds forkæmpere og onde hadefulde kampagner mod sine modstandere.

beskyldes de vestlige lande for at blande sig i Sri Lankas suverænitet, ved at planlægge at vedtage en resolution om Sri Lanka i FN`s menneskerettighedsråd i Genève.
Begge katolske ledere har overfor Sri Lankas præsidents udpegede kommission (LLRC), berettet om deres oplevelser med krigen. Den tamilske biskop har i sin vidne beretning til kommissionen udtalt at der boede omkring 430.000 tamiler i Vanni området, hvor også han selv kommer fra. Efter krigen havnede ca.280.000 i Sri Lankas detentionslejre. Biskoppen satte spørgsmålstegn ved de resterende.
Splittelsen mellem de tamilske og Sinhalesiske katolske ledere, viser tydeligt at de to nationer ikke kan leve sammen.
